Swarm II, Mission: Safe Harbor

A recent swarmboats demonstration sponsored by the Office of Naval Research showcased improved autonomous swarming capabilities; shared situational awareness and greater cooperative decision-making between groups of inexpensive, autonomous swarmboats; and expanded missions, including harbor defense.

SIS was designated the Demonstration Lead by ONR and was responsible for development and execution of the demonstration in addition to being the Lead System Integrator which required the outfitting of USVs with CAN systems, building the autonomy kits, developing software, as well as the operation of the vessels.

The event demonstrated the following actions:

  1. Four USVs performing a collaborative mission without the requirement for safety riders or remote control
  2. Unmanned collaborative harbor patrol, all four USVs working in a common area
  3. Target acquisition by USVs using radar and the passing of that radar data to a shared Common Operational Picture (COP)
  4. Target intercepted and trailed, designated "Hostile" or "Friendly" to all USVs by CDAS
  5. Collaborative autonomous escort of target through the patrol area
  6. Autonomous return of USVs to patrol behavior after target leaves patrol area
