Siemens Xcelerator Portfolio – Unparalleled Among Leading Software Providers
- 01/18/2022
Siemens AG launched what would ultimately become Siemens Digital Industries Software in 2007 with the acquisition of UGS Corporation. Since then, Siemens has invested more than $10 billion in acquisitions to give Digital Industries Software the most comprehensive portfolio of industrial product design, engineering, manufacturing and data management software solutions in the world.
Growth through acquisition is fairly common in the global technology market. Large corporations routinely acquire IP with specific functionality, technology and/or vertical industry requirements to fill gaps in their current offerings. More often than not, however, they have little interest beyond filling those specific gaps. Consequently, users often find themselves with an “end of service life” notice, a messy software migration project and a hefty upgrade fee in order to maintain support.
By contrast, since its first acquisition all those years ago, Siemens has consistently demonstrated a commitment to integration and interoperability of acquired products, as well as ongoing support for those products’ users. Thus, when viewed through that lens, the launch of the Xcelerator Portfolio in 2019 was simply the next step in that longstanding commitment to delivering a seamless platform to enable digital transformation. In their own words, Xcelerator is: “An integrated portfolio of software, services and an application development platform that speeds the digital transformation cycle and unlocks a powerful industrial network effect.”
In practical terms, Xcelerator is comprised of existing Siemens software products (e.g., NX CAD, Simcenter 3D, NX CAM, etc.) with enhanced integration and harmonized interfaces. It also incorporates the Mendix low-code application development platform for quick customization to meet specific business needs with minimal IT overhead. Xcelerator was built to enable companies of all sizes to speed their digital transformation with the ability to “design, realize and optimize” in a single integrated environment with a comprehensive digital twin, personalized and adaptable interfaces; and a flexible open ecosystem.
In sum, Xcelerator does indeed have the potential to be a “Catalyst for the Digital Enterprise.”
“Xcelerator is an integrated portfolio of software, services and an application development platform that speeds the digital transformation cycle and unlocks a powerful industrial network effect. Blurs the boundaries between traditional stand-alone engineering domains such as electrical, mechanical and software.”
